Causes of Bankart’s Lesion

There are 2 commons ways that shoulder can be unstable

  • Shoulder Dislocation

Severe injury, or trauma, is often the cause of an initial shoulder dislocation. When the head of the humerus dislocates, the socket bone (glenoid) and the ligaments in the front of the shoulder are often injured. The labrum — the cartilage rim around the edge of the glenoid — may also tear. This is commonly called a Bankart lesion. A first dislocation can lead to continued dislocations, giving out, or a feeling of instability.

  • Hyperlaxity

In a small minority of patients, the shoulder can become unstable without a history of injury or repetitive strain. These patients have naturally loose ligaments throughout the body. This is called Hyperlaxity.

How do I know that I have shoulder instability?

Common symptoms of chronic shoulder instability include:

  • Repeated shoulder dislocations
  • Repeated instances of the shoulder giving out
  • A persistent sensation of the shoulder feeling loose, slipping in and out of the joint, or just hanging there
  • Pain on throwing ball or objects

Surgeon Consultation

When you consult us we do thourough examination of your shoulder and diagnose clinically.

We may ask to get x-ray and MRI to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out any other injuries.

  • Do all the shoulder instability need surgery?

No,We treat all Chronic shoulder instability with nonsurgical options initially, If these options do not relieve the pain and instability, you may need surgery. We consider your age, activity levels and your expectations after the procedure before suggesting surgery.

  • The surgical procedure we do

The Bankart Shoulder Repair procedure involves small incisions around the shoulder region. The orthopaedic specialist can then insert a tiny camera so he/she can view the structures on a TV monitor. The labrum is attached to the glenoid bone using small instruments. To hold the tissue in place, the surgeon inserts small anchors into the bone on and stitches to suture the labrum in place.

Open Surgery. Some patients may need an open surgical procedure. This involves making an incision over the shoulder and performing the repair under direct visualization.

Risks and complications

Possible complications include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Shoulder stiffness
  • Blood vessel or nerve injury
  • Post traumatic arthritis
  • Recurrent Instability

Care at Home

  • Before Leaving Hospital
  • Upto 3 weeks after surgery
  • 3 to 6 weeks after surgery
  • 6 months to 1 year after surgery

Before Leaving Hospital

Talk with your surgeon about any precautions you may have after surgery. Walking and use of the arm for gentle activities (with the elbow at the side) are often encouraged soon after surgery, but the surgeon should be consulted before considering.

Make sure you have a follow-up appointment scheduled with your surgeon 10 to 14 days after your surgery. You will leave the hospital with arm pouch or immobilizer and should continue to use it till 6 weeks.

Upto 3 weeks after surgery

Your follow up visits will happen by now, sutures will be removed by end of 2nd week. You will be on Home physical therapy and continue using your arm pouch/immobilizer. You should do shoulder ROM exercises as advised by you surgeon

3 to 6 weeks after surgery

You will still be on Home physical therapy. You can resume to your daily routine activities,After about six weeks, you can use the entire arm, including the shoulder, for gentle activities. Your physical therapy now includes strengthening exercises.

3 to 6 months after surgery

Continue physical therapy, you will be more comfortable. Can involve in routine activities with precations.Schedule an appointment with your surgeon at 6 months

6 months to 1 year after surgery

After one year, about 90% patients are pain-free, with stable shoulder joint and will be resumed to their pre injury status.

Our Outcomes

90-95% success rate

95% of the patient will resume to their previous activity level

6 weeks

To get back to daily normal activities.

Frequently Asked Questions?

  • What is arthroscopic Bankart repair surgery?

Arthroscopic Bankart repair surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat shoulder instability. The surgery is performed through small incisions using an arthroscope, a small camera that provides a view inside the joint.

  • Who is a good candidate for this surgery?

Individuals with shoulder instability, dislocations, or labral tears are typically good candidates for arthroscopic Bankart repair surgery.

  • How is the procedure performed?

The procedure involves making small incisions in the shoulder, inserting the arthroscope to view the inside of the joint, and repairing the torn labrum (the rim of cartilage that surrounds the shoulder socket) using sutures or anchors.

  • What is the recovery time after arthroscopic Bankart repair surgery?

Recovery time after arthroscopic Bankart repair surgery varies depending on the individual and the extent of the injury. Physical therapy is typically recommended to help with the rehabilitation process, and most people can return to light activities within several weeks.

  • Is there pain after the surgery?

Some discomfort and pain are expected after the surgery but can be managed with medication prescribed by your doctor.

  • What are the risks associated with this surgery?

Like any surgical procedure, arthroscopic Bankart repair surgery carries a risk of complications such as infection, bleeding, and nerve damage. However, these risks are generally low with minimally invasive procedures.

  • Can I return to sports after the surgery?

Returning to sports will depend on your individual recovery and the type of sport you play. Most people can return to light activities within several weeks, and more intense activities can usually be resumed after several months.

  • Will I need physical therapy after the surgery?

Physical therapy is typically recommended after arthroscopic Bankart repair surgery to help with the rehabilitation process and to regain strength and mobility in the shoulder.

  • How long does the repair last?

The success of the repair will depend on several factors, including the patient's age, activity level, and the extent of the injury. In general, arthroscopic Bankart repairs have a high success rate and can provide long-lasting relief from shoulder instability.

  • Can the repair re-tear?

While the risk of re-tear is low, it's not possible to guarantee that the repair will never re-tear. It's important to follow your doctor's post-operative instructions and to avoid activities that put excessive stress on the shoulder.
