Spinal Fusion

What is spinal fusion?

Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure in which two or more vertebrae are permanently joined to eliminate motion between them.In Spinal fusion we place bone or bone like grafts within the space between two vertebra and uses screws, rods, metal plates to hold the vertebra bone together

Spinal fusion is also known as:
  • Arthrodesis
  • Anterior spinal fusion
  • Posterior spinal fusion
  • Vertebral interbody fusion

Spinal fusion can be performed at any region of the spine like cervical, thoracic or lumbar

We may recommend spinal fusion to treat

There are common reasons

  • Deformities of the spine

Spinal fusion can help correct spinal deformities, such as a sideways curvature of the spine (scoliosis).

  • Spinal weakness or instability

Your spine may become unstable if there's abnormal or excessive motion between two vertebrae. This is a common side effect of severe arthritis in the spine. Spinal fusion can be used to restore spinal stability in such cases.

  • Herniated disk

Spinal fusion may be used to stabilize the spine after removal of a damaged (herniated) disk

  • Fracture of vertebra

To maintain the curvature of the spine and reduce the compression on the cord spinal fusion is recommended.

  • Infection of the bone

Spinal fusion is recommended When there is infection of the bone, the vertebra becomes weak and collapses causing compression of the cord and deformity. Who might need knee replacement-content to be replaced

Surgeon Consultation

When you consult us we do thorough examination and clinical diagnosis done. We recommend surgical or non surgical treatment only after thorough study of your x-ray and MRI.

  • Any alternative treatment available other than Fusion surgery

Yes, when the symptoms are less severe we always recommend non surgical treatmentwith physical therapy.

  • Surgical procedure

We do Spinal fusion surgery under anesthesiaalways. We identify the level of the spine which is causing problem,we secure the vertebra with screws and rod, remove the disc in between the vertebra and the gap is filled with the bone graft. The average surgical time is 1 to 2 hours, again it varies from patient to patient depending on severity of the problem and various other factors

Risks and complications

Spinal fusion is generally a safe procedure. But as with any surgery, spinal fusion carries the potential risk of complications.

Potential complications include:

  • Infection
  • Poor wound healing
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Injury to blood vessels or nerves in and around the spine
  • Pain at the site from which the bone graft is taken
Is the spinal fusion a day care procedure?

No,We advise you stay in the hospital for at least 48hrs after the surgery for better care and management

Care at Home

  • Before Leaving Hospital

As long as everything is healed and looks right, you’ll be cleared to return to nearly all your typical activities including bending, twisting, and lifting.

Generally, it’s still best to avoid things such as extreme sports, but you can discuss limitations with your surgeon once before doing.

Most people will feel that they are fully recovered by about 1 year following their spinal fusion. They’ve returned to all their usual activities and are no longer having any pain. However, your vertebrae will continue to heal and fuse for up to 18 months.

Frequently Asked Questions?

  • What is spinal fusion surgery?

Spinal fusion surgery is a procedure used to join two or more vertebrae in the spine to reduce pain and improve stability. The surgery is performed to treat conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and spinal fractures.

  • Who is a good candidate for this surgery?

Individuals with chronic back pain, instability, or nerve compression caused by spinal conditions may be good candidates for spinal fusion surgery.

  • How is the procedure performed?

The procedure typically involves removing the damaged disc and placing a bone graft between the vertebrae. Metal screws and rods may also be used to hold the vertebrae in place while the bone graft fuses.

  • What is the recovery time after spinal fusion surgery?

Recovery time after spinal fusion surgery varies depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure. Physical therapy is typically recommended to help with the rehabilitation process, and most people can return to light activities within several weeks.

  • Is there pain after the surgery?

Some discomfort and pain are expected after the surgery but can be managed with medication prescribed by your doctor.

  • What are the risks associated with this surgery?

Like any surgical procedure, spinal fusion surgery carries a risk of complications such as infection, bleeding, and nerve damage. However, these risks are generally low with minimally invasive procedures.

  • Can I return to sports after the surgery?

Returning to sports will depend on your individual recovery and the type of sport you play. Most people can return to light activities within several weeks, and more intense activities can usually be resumed after several months.

  • Will I need physical therapy after the surgery?

Physical therapy is typically recommended after spinal fusion surgery to help with the rehabilitation process and to regain strength and mobility in the back.

  • How long does the fusion last?

The success of the fusion will depend on several factors, including the patient's age, activity level, and the extent of the injury. In general, spinal fusions have a high success rate and can provide long-lasting relief from back pain.

  • Can the fusion fail?

While the risk of fusion failure is low, it's not possible to guarantee that the fusion will never fail. It's important to follow your doctor's post-operative instructions and to avoid activities that put excessive stress on the back.
