Best Shoulder Joint Replacement Service

Shoulder joint replacement surgery is done to relieve the pain and improve the mobility of the joint.

Here we remove and replace the damaged parts of the shoulder with artificial metal components.

We either do replacement of just the head of the humerus bone (ball), or replacement of both the ball and the socket (glenoid).

Shoulder joint is an important joint which has maximum range of motion compare to other joints of the body.Shoulder joint is a ball and socket type of synovial joint which is formed by Head of humerus(Ball) and Glenoid of scapula (Socket). The joint is also supported by ligaments and tendons around the joint.

When do you need the shoulder replacement surgery?

When you have unbearable pain and disability due to any of the following conditions

  • 1. Osteoarthritis (Degenerative Joint Disease)

Osteoarthritis is an age-related wear-and-tear type of arthritis. It usually occurs in people 50 years of age and older, but may occur in younger people, too. The cartilage that cushions the bones of the shoulder softens and wears away. The bones then rub against one another. Over time, the shoulder joint slowly becomes stiff and painful.

  • 2. Rheumatoid arthritis

This is a disease in which the synovial membrane that surrounds the joint becomes inflamed and thickened. This chronic inflammation can damage the cartilage and eventually cause cartilage loss, pain, and stiffness.

  • 3. Post-traumatic arthritis:

This can follow a serious shoulder injury. Fractures of the bones that make up the shoulder or tears of the shoulder tendons or ligaments may damage the articular cartilage over time. This causes shoulder pain and limits shoulder function. This can follow a serious shoulder injury. Fractures of the bones that make up the shoulder or tears of the shoulder tendons or ligaments may damage the articular cartilage over time. This causes shoulder pain and limits shoulder function.

  • 4. Rotator Cuff Tear Arthropathy:

A patient with a very large, long-standing rotator cuff tear may develop cuff tear arthropathy. In this condition, the changes in the shoulder joint due to the rotator cuff tear may lead to arthritis and destruction of the joint cartilage.

  • 5. Avascular Necrosis (Osteonecrosis):

Avascular necrosis, or osteonecrosis, is a painful condition that occurs when the blood supply to the bone is disrupted. Because bone cells die without a blood supply, osteonecrosis can ultimately cause destruction of the shoulder joint and lead to arthritis. Chronic steroid use, severe fracture of the shoulder, sickle cell disease, and heavy alcohol use are all risk factors for avascular necrosis.

  • 6. Severe Fractures:

A severe fracture of the shoulder is another common reason people have shoulder replacements. When the head of the upper arm bone is shattered, it may be very difficult for us to put the pieces of bone back in place. In addition, the blood supply to the bone pieces can be interrupted. In this case, we may recommend a shoulder replacement.

  • 6. Failed Previous Shoulder Replacement Surgery:

Although uncommon, some shoulder replacements fail, most often because of implant loosening, wear, infection, and dislocation. When this occurs, a second joint replacement surgery — called a revision surgery — may be necessary.

Is Shoulder Joint Replacement for You?

Shoulder Joint Replacement may be suitable for patients who experience:

The standard total shoulder replacement involves replacing the arthritic joint surfaces with a highly polished metal ball attached to a stem, and a plastic socket.

  • Stemmed Hemiarthroplasty

Depending on the condition of your shoulder, we replace only the ball. This procedure is called a hemiarthroplasty. We replaces only the head of the humerus with a metal ball and stem,.hence it is called a stemmed hemiarthroplasty.

  • Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement

Reverse total shoulder replacement is used for people who have:

    • Completely torn rotator cuffs with severe arm weakness
    • Severe arthritis due to rotator cuff tearing
    • Had a previous shoulder replacement that failed

In reverse total shoulder replacement, the socket and metal ball are interchanged A metal ball is attached to the shoulder bone(glenoid), and a plastic socket is attached to the upper arm bone(humerus). This allows the patient have a better shoulder movements.

Risks and complications

When complications occur, most are successfully treatable. These are possible risks associated with shoulder replacement.

  • Infection
  • Prosthesis wear and tear
  • Implant loosening
  • Shoulder dislocation
  • Nerve damage
Is shoulder replacement a day care surgery?

Shoulder replacement can be done as a day care procedure and you can go home on the same day. But we recommend to stay for at least 24hours in the hospital after surgery for your safety and better care.

6 months to 1 year after surgery

After one year, about 95% of shoulder replacement patients are pain-free, and the remaining 5% usually only experience time-related pain or unintentional pain due to excessive activity.

Likewise, there is probably no significant limit on strength, depending on the condition of the deltoid and rotator cuffs, especially if both muscle groups are healthy before surgery.
